Yashikigami are guardian deities that protect the house and its land.The deity is enshrined in a hokora, a small shrine built in the backyard of the house, on adjacent land, or in a nearby forest.In Japan, it is believed that the ancestors were enshrined in the mountains and forests near houses to hold ancestral memorial services, as it was believed that the spirits of deceased people lived in the mountains since ancient times.
