Wooden Mask for ritual
This is a small carved wooden mask used for ceremonial purposes in 19th century Timor Island. The details are not known, and there are several theories, but it is said that by burying the mask in the ground, it was used as a substitute for oneself and prayed for protection from death.
 
祭祀のための木彫面
19世紀のティモール島で祭祀の際に使われたと思われる木彫りの小さな面。詳細は不明で諸説ありますが、面を土に埋めることで自身の身代わりとし、死を遠ざけたという言い伝えがあるようです。
